Dr Farah Naz
FACULTY

Farah Naz completed MSc in Biochemistry from University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, MPhil (Biochemistry from University of Agriculture Faisalabad and PhD in Molecular Biology from CEMB, Universityof the Punjab, Lahore. Joined CEMB as the start of professional life in 2008 on BPS-17.to date working on BPS -18. Before joining the CEMB ,worked at NIAB (Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology), Faisalabad, Pakistan with Dr. Shafqat Farooq in Plant Molecular Breeding Group under the project of IAEA entitled “Marker Mediated Identification of Water Deficiency Tolerance Character in Upland rice germplasm and its Pyramiding in Low Land rice Cultivars” and published three research articles on this work during the period working at NIAB.
After joining CEMB worked on a USAID funded project entitled as characterization of novel triple acting chimeric domain antimicrobials and test their efficacy against known Pakistani mastitis pathogens. I successfully make depository of hundred plus drug resistant staphylococcus aureus, gram positive bacteria from Pakistani dairy population. I was also successful in obtaining the relevant phage that had the capability to kill these resistant isolates.
I was a visiting faculty member in Government College University Lahore for a period of one year. I was also a Lab Incharge of genetic diseases group for DNA extraction, primer designing, PCR, sequencing and DNA stock maintenance. Designing Genome Wide primers and stock maintenance for further research work. Sequenced the deafness genes for many families.
Worked with virology research group and worked in collaboration with Lahore General Hospital on Community acquired infections by pathogenic bacteria. Sequenced the resistant and structural genes in staphylococcus aureus to track the reasons of resistance in pathogenic bacteria causing community acquired infections. Successfully completed the project. Sequences submitted in genbank.
Then joined the plant group, the Seed Biotechnology lab in 2017. Worked on most devastating group of insects/pests on cotton including thrips and whitefly.
Research Interests:
I focused my research interest on insect/pest management against thrips and whitefly on cotton to increase the cotton yield in Pakistan for economy boost by adding a thrips and whitefly resistant variety through cry proteins / Bt proteins instead of using conventional breeding efforts for the improvement of cotton in coming years of the career.
